Infection prevention and control

Posted by DS Medical on 30th Nov 2019

Infection Prevention and Control or IPC is a scientific and practical approach created to help protect patients and healthcare workers.

Within the UK there are many techniques and practices used in IPC such as; hand, respiratory and cough hygiene, as well as safe management of equipment, linen, body fluids and waste items (including sharps). At DS Medical we have a wide range of affordable products that help healthcare professionals keep on top of IPC practices.

Effective Ways to Prevent and Control Infection

Antibacterial Surface Wipes

Sanitising wipes are a quick and efficient way for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces as well as medical equipment. The Clinell Universal Sanitising Wipes are proven to kill 99.999% of germs, containing a mix of biocides with a variety of mechanisms of action, that prevent bacterial resistance and superbug formation.

Clinical Waste Management

All healthcare services understand the importance of the safe disposal of clinical waste like swabs, dressings, and plasters. At DS Medical we provide specially designed waste bags allowing you to dispose of such items, safely sealing the bag to prevent the transmission of infection.

In addition, we offer an array of sharps bins in a selection of sizes for the safe disposal of all needles and syringes, whatever size space you are working in.

Body Fluid Spills Kits

Blood and other body fluids present a high risk for the transmission of infection, especially for the healthcare professionals handling them. Our single use body fluid spills kits are designed for the safe and effective handling and containment of body fluid spills, including all the items you need for the safe management of body fluids. Alternatively try our Emesis Bag with its revolutionary twist ‘n’ seal lock design, preventing spills as well as containing odours and the spread of infection.

Handwashing

Fun fact, more germs are spread from poor handwashing than kissing! Washing your hands correctly removes dirt, viruses and bacteria, stopping them from spreading to other people and objects.

Here are some more tips to make sure you are washing your hands effectively and regularly.

  • You should spend 15-20 seconds washing your hands, around the length of the ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice round.
  • Always wash them after using the toilet, handling raw foods like meat and vegetables or having contact with animals (including pets).
  • Make sure to wash your hands before eating or handling ready-to-eat food.
  • Drying your hands thoroughly is almost as important as washing them properly, ideally with fresh paper towels as drying clean hands on a dirty towel will undo your work.
  • Always use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub when soap and running water are unavailable.
  • It is especially important to do this when visiting someone in a hospital or any healthcare setting.
